On the 13th of February, students from the Amal Shimon Peres Highschool for High tech and Arts attended a workshop hosted by the Tel Aviv university (The Center for the Study of the United States in Partnership with the Fulbright Program) under the guides of The American Studies Program and lasted a total of 5 hours.
The first lector, Dr. Maya Klein, spoke about short stories and the American experience, using “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson as a point of reference. Throughout her speech, she challenged the crowds understanding of American short stories, everyday experiences, understanding motives and messages in texts, or in other words, challenged the students understanding of literature. Dr. Maya Klein provided insightful information on the subject while giving the participants room for input, debating and conversation.
After a brief intermission to refresh the pupils minds, Yossi Edri came to speak about “How Sport Reflects the Changing Face of America”, otherwise meaning the correlation between sports and real life events. During his speech, he told the students about different political protests during professional sports events as a reflection of the struggles people experienced at that time. As well as explaining, he left a window for the students to expand on real world events and challenging each other. Overall, the lector provided great information and showed a great understanding on the subject.
As the final speech, Dr. Yoav Fromer spoke about “Americas Founding Principles- the Musical”, otherwise using the famous music “Hamilton” as a way to introduce the students to a new view of Americas founders. While speaking, Yoav made it a point to expand the students horizons outside the usual understanding of the stereotypical American, and to instead see the true foundation of America, by providing insightful information while letting the students express themselves.
Overall, the workshop proved to be a unique, highly educational, interactive and challenging activity, perfectly suited for intelligent students.
